  • SEO: Backlinks

    BacklinksIn today's search engine optimization, backlinks are becoming more and more important. As a strictly white-hat SEO company, we haven't talked much about backlinks because of the inevitable gray area we knew we would find ourselves in. In the past, we've stressed that the more helpful your website is - the more of a resource it is for people visiting, the more folks will link back to your website naturally. While this truly is the right mindset to have, we've always known that this can also in many circumstances be naive.

    Nowadays, we find that more and more small websites are starting backlinking campaigns. This either takes a lot of time, or a lot of money - and in many cases, both. Going to other people's websites with the single purpose to create a link back to yourself on a blog or forum seems a bit black-hat to us, but there are ways to rationalize doing it.

    For instance: you can be helpful all over the internet - not just on your own website. Join forums and follow blogs that are in your business field or niche and start making useful, helpful and constructive comments and feedback on those forums and blogs. Add to their content - answer people's questions, and generally be helpful - legitimately. Simply going to these other websites and typing "I agree" with a link simply will not cut it. At least not to us.

    This will create backlinks for you. Not all of the links may count, but they will still help people find your website as well as add to your positive reputation. Here are some ways to create backlinks for your website:

    1. Blog commenting
    2. Classified ads
    3. Article submission
    4. Social bookmarking
    5. Press releases
    6. Online group posting
    7. Forum posting
    8. Directory Submission
    9. Social Networking

    Remember to always keep in mind the quality of the website you are creating a backlink on. Don't use link farms or directories that aren't legit. You'll most likely know them when you see them. Basically, anything that looks like a collection of links is probably just that and nothing more - and won't do much for you. If you participate in buying/selling links outside of legitimate advertising, you could even be penalized by Google or even banned.

  • How to Promote Your Website on Google

    Sometimes, even after we educate our clients about SEO (search engine optimization), we get the question, "Yeah, but how do I promote my website on Google?". Well, for starters, that's what SEO is all about. But for the laymen out there, (and for those of you reading this that are not clients of ours) we'll provide a very basic list of things to keep in mind when attempting to get better search results in Google. 

    How to Promote Your Website on Google1. Create a cross-browser compatible website
    2. Submit your website to dmoz.org and other directories
    3. Start a Blog with an RSS feed.
    4. Sign up for Google Analytics
    5. Set titles on all pages (H1, H2, H3, etc.)
    6. Include meta data (description, keywords)
    7. Create a robots.txt file for search engines.
    8. Create a site map on your website.
    9. Write useful and helpful content on your website.
    10. Write useful and helpful content on your blog.
    11. Make your website a resource for those that find it.
    12. Make sure there are no broken links on your website.
    13. Set up a smooth navigation structure. Make sure it's not confusing.
    14. Start a Facebook and Twitter account connected with your website and/or blog.
    15. Begin link building: the higher quality the connections, the better the results will be.
    16. Own your domain for more than one year, and buy more than one year at a time. Google likes permanence.
    17. Make sure people can comment on your Blog. Respond to them.
    18. Be sure that every image on your website has an Alt Attribute.
    19. Make sure that the file structure of your website is simple and intuitive.
    20. Use naming conventions that are clear and make sense for all images and files.
    21. Relevance, Relevance, Relevance. Make sure that your HTML title, meta data, content titles (H1, H2, etc), images, and actual content are all tied in with each other for each individual page on your website.
    22. Do not try to trick Google. Stuffing keywords, repeating content, copying content from other sources, or link farming can get you penalized or even banned from Google.
    23. Update your website regularly.
    24. Update your Blog at least once per week. The more often it's updated, the better.
    25. Don't give up.

    Honestly, some of the items listed above will be confusing even to the layman. If you're not an SEO expert, web designer or developer, the truth is you really aren't expected to know these things. That's why businesses like ours offer search engine optimization as a service. However, there are some great points on here that you should pay attention to. The quality, usefulness and helpfulness of your content is completely within your control. Google would argue that the quality of your content is the most important thing, and we don't disagree.


  • SEO: Connections

    In this third and final segment of our SEO Effectiveness article, we'll talk about the last (but not least) important concept of the SEO triad: SEO connections.

    In the last two articles we've discussed SEO relevancy and importance. Some might argue that relevancy and connections are the only concepts of real note. We disagree. While relevancy is intrinsically tied in with both aforementioned concepts, it was important to us to dedicate an article entirely to it's concept. In essence, it is of utmost importance to understand all three concepts in order to successfully achieve a professional search engine optimization perspective. 

    SEO connections have to do with the inbound and outbound links that connect your website to the entire internet. The connections your website has tells a lot about how important, relevant, trustworthy and independent your website really is. Just as in real life, a lot can be said about you by who you have relationships with, who you spend time with, where you spend that time, etc. Your website is no different. Search engines like to see good, healthy relationships in websites. It's good to have this state of mind when thinking about your website in this context.

    To continue with our "life" analogy, we feel we must impress upon you that there are such things as good connections and bad connections. Let's say you have a link to your website from CNN. That's a pretty darn good connection. On the other hand, let's say you have a link to your website from a "link farm" website. A link farm website deals in trading links either for free or for some amount of payment. These links can be from its members, or from the site itself. Many of these so-called link farms are not considered good connections. They are meant to manipulate, and the search engines are getting much more savvy about noticing the quality of connections your website has. In the real world, this kind of connection might be viewed as "seedy". You want to try to keep your connections as real, healthy, relevant and of good quality as possible.

    In days past, "pagerank" was considered the utmost qualifier of good, quality links. While this may be the way it still is in some cases, it is not always. Quality no longer equals pagerank in search engine's eyes. So, if that link farm has a Google pagerank of 10, that's pretty awesome... for them. Unfortunately the link may be less worthy of it's pagerank then you might think. If a website's only content is a bunch of links, that makes that website important - but the connection only tells search engines that your website is connected to a website that farms out links for profit or for manipulation. Don't be fooled. If your search engine of choice has not wizened up, it soon will.

    News sites, popular industry blogs, online magazines, web 2.0 link sharing sites such as Digg, and referrals from related popular industry websites are the ticket. These as a rule are viewed as much better, healthier website connections as far as search engines are concerned. It takes a bit of common sense and possibly a conscience when choosing or pursuing your website's connections. Most people make poor connections online not out of bad intention, but out of ignorance.

    The only "link farm" type of connections we could possibly recommend are industry-related online directories and yellow pages. Most of the time these websites are a resource for their viewers, many of whom are consumers looking for a product or service in their area. However, be warned; not all of these websites are what they appear. Do some research, look around their website. Are they what they say they are? Are they as popular a resource as they would have you believe? Find out before you make the connection.

    When it comes to SEO connections, a little vigilance and research can go a long way. This also goes for our previous covered concepts, SEO relevance and SEO importance. When implementing any concept of search engine optimization on your website, remember that honesty, integrity, good content and smart connections are the keys to success in the long run.

  • SEO: Importance

    This is the second part of our SEO Effectiveness article dealing with relevancy, importance and connections

    SEO "importance" is one of the top three concepts to remember when dealing with search engine optimization on any given website. It is intrinsically tied in with the other two concepts, "relevancy" and "connections". Both of these concepts deal with and add to your website's importance on the web. 

    In the eyes of search engines, a lot of ranking is decided along the lines of how important your website is viewed. How relevant is the information on your website, and how many connections, or other sites linking into it does it have? How trustworthy is your website? Does it attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of the search engines and/or potential viewers, or does it actually provide quality, usable content? 

    Make search engines work for you. It is difficult to fool people and search engines these days - so why try? It is easier to simply provide content that is easily understood and is useful to all that peruse your website. If your content is relevant, helpful and informative enough (even if you are simply selling a product), the links, connections and importance of your website will inevitably start reflecting the quality of your website. 

    On the other hand, to paraphrase a famous quote, "Search engines help those who help themselves." Be prepared to reach out to other businesses, websites and directories online in order to make your website as accessible and findable as possible. The more relevant the connections and approachable your website is will dictate just how important search engines view your website.

  • SEO: Relevancy

    In the first of our three part SEO article, we'll discuss the importance of search engine optimization relevancy. It's definitely one of the top three most important concepts to keep in mind when implementing SEO on your website. 

    Relevancy is pretty straight-forward. Is your content relevant? Is your meta data, page titles, subtitles, and all other content relevant to each other? Are they relevant to the user who just found you in Google or Yahoo? When it comes to search engines, content is king. Make sure your website has straight-forward, rich and relevant content. It is wise to partition your site into as many pages as needed in order to keep your content separated and relevant for one "umbrella" subject per page. 

    Here's an example. You have one page titled "bankruptcy". If you have the funds to create a large site, you could even split different types of bankruptcy pages. For this example, we'll just have one page. Your content would be all about bankruptcy. It would be informative and full of usable, relevant keywords that points people looking for bankruptcy information to that specific page. Your meta data (title, description, keywords) in the head portion of your page's HTML would match the content on the page. The title would be geared towards it, the subtitles would be geared towards it, and the content would be geared towards it. 

    You can even go out of your way to point out the relevancy to both users and search engines alike. Using header tags for your titles and subtitles is important (H1, H2, etc). After that, you might even bold some of the keywords and phrases in your content. Make sure to only emphasize words that you have in your meta data and/or are extremely relevant to the user and the page's subject matter. This lets Google and other search engines know not only exactly what is on the page, but also what is important on that page.

    Through relevance and emphasizing that relevance, you can target your page in a way that gives easy access to users and search engines alike. These days, search engines try as hard as they can to be as close to the real thing as possible. And by real thing, I mean a human that has just brought up the website. How useful is your content? How informative? How easy is it to navigate? Is it a simple concept to understand what this page is all about with just a quick glance or two? Keep those things in mind for each and every page you develop content for, and the SEO on the entire website as a whole will get more and more potent. 

    So, the trick to keep in mind is this: don't think about tricking or fooling the search engines with keywords or meta data or bold text alone. Make rich, relevant and useful content, and the search engines (as well as people) will respond very well to it. People first. Google and Yahoo don't scan your page to make sure it's friendly to their search engines as much as they care that your content is relevant to the potential user.

    In a nutshell, the more links that point to a site, the more a site is going to be considered "popular". If 100 sites use the words "The Best SEO" and link said text to a website, a search engine is going to be in favor of listing that website for "The Best SEO" on the front of their index for that string of keywords. One must remember, however, that one can not simply rely on a "link farm" or link sharing site in order to get this done.

    The sites that link to yours must be relevant, helpful sites all by themselves. The more "important" or "popular" sites that link to yours, the more important and popular yours will be as well. The best way to succeed in this area is to become a viable resource of information for internet surfers yourself. The more useful the information, the more other websites will naturally link to yours.

  • Image SEO

    Many SEO companies do not pay as much attention to this aspect of search engine optimization. Image optimizing is an important part of a complete SEO package. The SEO Authority pays meticulous attention to every detail of search optimization down to the smallest detail or most unimportant graphic.

    ISO (or image search optimization) is the process of organizing the content of a website to increase relevance to a specific keyword on image search engines. Like search engine optimization, the aim is to achieve a higher organic search engine results and increase ranking on the search engines.

    Image search optimization techniques can be viewed as a subset of search engine optimization that focuses on attaining high ranks on image results in a search engine such as Google, Yahoo or MSN. Unlike normal SEO process, there isn't much involved in ISO.
